In Memoriam: Tenant-Movement People Lost to COVID-19

Over 100,000 people have died nationwide from COVID-19, more than 20,000 of them in New York City. Each of those people was important to somebody. They were people’s fathers, mothers, children, friends, and loved ones. Every person who has died from COVID-19 deserves to be remembered publicly.

We have reached out our partners and allies to learn about their members. We learned about the death of longtime leaders like Nesly Paul from the Flatbush Tenants Coalition; Lidia Lopez, a Make the Road New York member who made sure that people were fed at meetings; and Armand D’Avignon, the spouse and father of fearless Zara Tenants Coalition leaders in Queens.

The names here represent just a few of the people we have lost. This virus has hit the housing justice community hard, as it has hit black and brown communities hardest.

We will continue to update this memorial at thetenant.org. Please email those you would like remembered to info@metcouncil.net.

Angel was his name with reason. He was an Angel. While here on earth he touched many lives and left an immense impact on those surrounding him. He was a dedicated father and husband who loved his family more than anything. He loved the Lord and we are sure he is in heaven rejoicing. He will be truly missed and never forgotten.

It’s very ugly to imagine, I am left with only our 6 year old daughter and without papers. I hope God helps and encourages me. It is very hard to know that this is the truth and I could never have thought that I would be left without the woman of my life. My little one asks for her mother all the time and I tell her that she is resting in heaven.

I think it’s very stressful what we are experiencing, without my husband, without having given him a dignified burial, and now I am helpless with my 4 children. I do not know how I am going to continue with this great pain. I have small kids, big kids understand but these little ones don’t understand. I have faith in God that we will be able to survive and move forward, because our lives have to continue

I have great sadness in my heart because I could not be with him in his last moments, it hurts me very much not to have been present.

Losing a parent is very difficult, hopefully soon this will pass and God will listen to us. It is very hard to lose a dad, from one moment to another without being prepared, this pandemic came from nowhere to destroy our lives and leave us in hunger and misery. I never thought this would break our hearts like this. So many families crying and without food and jobless, how can they face this.

He was a well-known man, but we didn’t know it, until he passed and we saw so many people on Facebook that he helped. He took off his clothes for those who needed him, he was a man of great passion and gave himself completely to his family. He took great care of us, singing and telling us to wash our hands singing, but he did not know that he was the one he needed to take care of – he got infected at his cleaning job. Now he’s gone…

Husband, dad and a great friend – that was how people knew you. You were always a hard-working, noble, good and loving person. You always took care and saw for others, now we ask you to take care of us from heaven. Our hearts are in mourning for your departure. You left without saying goodbye because you knew that if you did we would never have let you leave, this is not a goodbye but rather a see you later. You will always live in our hearts. Rest in peace.
