Charas Vigil

Charas Vigil

Supporters of Charas, the Lower East Side community arts center
facing eviction, held a candlelight vigil at City Hall Dec. 3, hoping to win
a last-minute reprieve. A court order staying the eviction expires Dec. 12,
and Charas expects landlord Gregg Singer to move for an eviction the next day.
Charas had won a jury decision against turning the building over to Singer,
who bought it from the city at a public auction in 1998 for $3.1 million, but
it was overturned on appeal.
