May 31: Fight Back Against Rent Increases

A coalition of West Harlem and Washington Heights community organizations has set May 31 as the day when they begin fighting back against rent increases of all sorts.

On that day, the coalition, still in formation, is having a public forum to address the issue of skyrocketing rents and how to fight back. At issue are rent increases set by the city Rent Guidelines Board, the state Division of Housing and Community Renewal’s failures to deal with tenants’ complaints of rent overcharges, and other methods used by landlords to raise rents.

Among the speakers at the forum will be Ken Rosenfeld, one of two tenant representatives on the Rent Guidelines Board. It will also include speakers from the community.

As Tenant/Inquilino goes to press, a location for the forum has not been found. You can call Rafael A. Sencion at (917) 458-6142 for more information. Meanwhile, mark the date down: Friday, May 31!
