Queens: Immigrant Tenants Harassed

California’s Proposition 187 has been held up by the courts, and most of the other anti-immigrant laws proposed recently haven’t been enacted. But that hasn’t stopped two Queens landlords from inventing some of their own to harass foreign-born tenants, according to complaints received by Met Council’s tenant hotline.

In one case, the landlord distributed a questionnaire asking tenants about their immigration status, saying he was authorized to do so by federal law. In another, the landlord claimed that Congress had passed a law denying rent-regulation protections to illegal immigrants. Both complaints came from tenants in Flushing, heavily populated by Korean, Chinese and other Asian immigrants.

No such federal laws exist.
