‘Seven and a Half Percent… Really Takes Our Dough’

Urging Albany to pass a bill that would end the Maximum Base Rent system and give rent-controlled tenants the same increases rent-stabilized tenants get, about 50 people rallied on the Upper West Side April 20. The MBR system raises rents by up to 7.5 percent a year for the 38,000 tenants still under rent control, so they argue that they’d actually be better off if the Rent Guidelines Board set their increases.

To make the point, they updated the ‘50s showtune “Seven and a Half Cents” to “Seven and a half percent/Really takes our dough.”
