Manny Vasquez, 70, Uptown Activist

Manny Vasquez, an extremely active member of the Riverside Edgecombe Neighborhood Association and Northern Manhattan is Not For Sale, died in June. He was 70.

Vasquez got involved in RENA five years ago, when his landlord tried to evict him and his wife from their apartment at 920 Riverside Drive in Washington Heights. They won the case, and he then threw himself into housing activism in the neighborhood.

“All of us who fought against the rezoning in Inwood will remember Manny, a fighter against gentrification, an activist for tenants’ rights, a militant man who participated in the long-fought struggle,” says Jeanie Dubnau of RENA. “We will remember this gentle, generous man who came to RENA every Thursday to help tenants. Manny was the one who brought fruit, sweets, snacks to all our meetings. Manny was the one giving out flyers on the streets. Manny was the one who smiled and welcomed everyone to RENA. Manny was the one who organized our parties. We will miss him terribly.”
